Early Learning

In 2006, United Way of West Georgia, Inc. started our local Success By 6 initiative to focus on Early Learning efforts in Troup County. By 2010, we were convinced that more needed to be done to help prepare children from birth to 5 years of age to be successful when they enter school. Research has shown that 90% of brain development occurs before the age of five, yet many parents still think that learning does not occur until their children go to school. Reading just 20 minutes a day for a year to a child can give that child one Million words! However, many families in Troup County do not even own books.

In order to do more to help children who have no preschool background be better prepared to learn when they enter school, United Way decided that a fund raiser was needed that would be dedicated to Early Learning programs and efforts such as United Way’s Success By 6, First Steps at West Georgia Health, Summer Play, and Troup BELL, Parents as Teachers in-home visitation program. The challenge was to design a fund raiser that would be unique in the area that would attract a lot of interest and support. Merry Market is that event.

Patterned after the Junior League Holiday Markets in many larger cities, Merry Market is in the planning stages for our third annual market in 2013. Sponsors are being recruited, potential vendors are being contacted, and marketing materials are in the design stage. There are various sponsorship levels for companies or individuals to give their financial support. Vendors are charged a booth rental fee which includes donating one item for the Silent Auction at the Preview Party Thursday evening. Funds are also raised through ticket sales which are $30.00 for Preview Party Tickets, and $5.00 for general admission Friday or Saturday.

Funds from Merry Market are allocated only to those agencies and programs focusing on Early Learning in Troup County
